The pace of hardware technology change has greatly increased. Scaling rate and associated cost reduction curves are now almost everything. Technology lifecycles have dramatically decreased, necessitating greatly accelerated disruptive new technology exploration, development, and commercialization in order to get to market scale and return on investment before in turn being disrupted by the next new disruptive technology. Disruptive new hardware technology must now get to scale before the arrival of AI super intelligence, whatever that might be. Old funding models, including many government funding and venture capital funding models, that took decades to get from idea to large commercial scale, are no longer viable.
Big capital and manufacturing capacity must now be integrated from the start. Scaling must now occur through companies that have already scaled and the need for highly specialized disruptive technology engineers is far greater than ever. Companies are in continual danger of being disrupted by the next new disruptive technology. Disruptive technology engineers are also often difficult for large companies to internalize - specific breakthroughs rarely happen on demand. A large, open, and competitive innovation market, where everyone can focus on their core competencies and creating intrinsic value, and opportunistically find innovation fit, is needed.
